Object: To show and compare canna cultivars, both from our position as as holders of the Plant Heritage National Collection of Cannas, and also as a nursery which sells cannas.

A particular object is to compare the many short growing cannas which are presently being introduced by commercial growers in Holland to meet the demand in garden centres for short-growing quick-flowering varieties, many of which are grown from seed (eg the Tropical, Cannove and Happy series).

Growing cannas in a trial also enables us to resolve naming problems, for instance to see when cannas with different names are indistinguishable. It also enables us to see when a variety is misnamed, or when a variety has been lost and possibly inferior variety introduced with the same name.

History of canna trials

The RHS have held trials of cannas on their Wisley trials ground in 1906 and 2002. Two of the award winning varieties from the 1906 trial continue to be available ('Wyoming', 'Louis Cayeux'). 22 varieties were given the RHS AGM Award. AGM varieties that continue to be available will be grown in our own trial.

This is our third trial of cannas. The first was in 2006, and we called it "Canna Trial International". Varieties were submitted by breeders in in UK, USA, Israel, Australia, Holland, France, hence the addition of "International" to the name.

We re-introduced the trial in 2017, and based on that success, we intend to hold it annually from now on. We have decided to keep the name "Canna Trial International". The manager of the trial is our employee Janis Raubiska.
